Labor Resource Costing posts an estimated labor cost per hour, per resource, to projects — with separate rates for Straight Time, Overtime, and Double-time based on the Time Type on each time entry. This is valuable because it puts a meaningful labor cost on the job as time is logged, rather than waiting for payroll to post, so your project cost reflects field labor in near-real time. For how this connects to scheduling and overtime, see Scheduling and Resources.
Navigate to BlueCollar → Labor Costing → BlueCollar Resource Rate Template:
Create a template with a descriptive name.
Add Resource Rate Template Detail records:
| Field | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Name | Description of the expense type (e.g., Wages, Burden) |
| Rate | Standard hourly rate (blank Time Type) |
| Overtime Rate | Rate for Time Type = OT |
| Double Time Rate | Rate for Time Type = DT |
| Debit Account / Credit Account | GL accounts posted when time is logged |
For each detail, add two Resource Rate Account Detail records — one with Is Debit = Yes, one with Is Debit = No — each able to specify Class, Department, Custom Segment, and Location.
A rate can be split into multiple pieces — for example, one portion to a Labor COGS account offsetting a Wages Offset Expense account, another to Labor COGS offsetting a Cell Phone Expense account. This lets you estimate specific portions of labor cost that offset real costs as they accrue elsewhere on the income statement.
Assign the finished template to employees via the BlueCollar Resource Rate Template field on the Employee Record.
Navigate to BlueCollar → Labor Costing → BlueCollar Overtime Template:
The First Day of the Week for Overtime Calculation global preference sets when the work week begins for these thresholds (and keeps the Gantt's week display aligned with the overtime boundaries).
BlueCollar calculates overtime from logged time and each employee's overtime template. Use BlueCollar → Labor Costing → Overtime Allocation to review and submit employee overtime.
If timesheets are later edited, the journals update automatically — there's no need to rerun the costing.
Also available through T&M billing. A Labor Resource Cost Journal can also be driven as a transaction type through your Time and Materials Billing configuration, so estimated labor cost can post as part of the T&M flow. The costing setup and run on this page are unchanged — see the T&M topic for that configuration option.
